L’École Biblique et Archéologique Françaisewasfounded as L’École Pratique d’Études Bibliques on November 15, 1890 by Father Marie-Joseph Lagrange, O.P. (1855-1938), within the Dominican Saint Stephen’s Monastery.It was the first graduate school for biblical and archaeological studies in the Holy Land. Conducted by the Dominicans,it was recognized, in 1920, by the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres of Paristhus becomingÉcoleBibliqueet ArchéologiqueFrançaise. it In 1983, the Congregation for Catholic Education in Rome granted l’ÉcoleBiblique the right to confer the degree of Doctor of Biblical Sciences.
