Pope Leo XIV's coat of arms offers a clear reflection of his Augustinian roots and the values he seeks to promote during his pontificate, particularly unity and communion within the Church.
The shield is divided diagonally into two sections. The upper half features a blue background with a white lily.
The lower half of the shield has a light background and displays an image that recalls the Order of Saint Augustine: a closed book with a heart pierced by an arrow. This is a direct reference to the conversion experience of Saint Augustine himself, who described his personal encounter with God’s Word using the phrase: “Vulnerasti cor meum verbo tuo” - “You have pierced my heart with your Word.”
The motto
Pope Leo XIV has also chosen a motto that reflects this Augustinian tradition: In Illo uno unum, which means “In the One, we are one.” The phrase is taken from Saint Augustine’s Exposition on Psalm 127, where he explains that “although we Christians are many, in the one Christ we are one.”
In a 2023 interview with Vatican News' Tiziana Campisi, then-Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost spoke about the significance of this motto: “As can be seen from my episcopal motto, unity and communion are truly part of the charism of the Order of Saint Augustine, and also of my way of acting and thinking,” he said. “I believe it is very important to promote communion in the Church, and we know well that communion, participation, and mission are the three key words of the Synod. So, as an Augustinian, for me promoting unity and communion is fundamental.”
Saint Augustine’s reflection on Psalm 127 highlights the theological foundation of this idea. “Christ - head and body - is one single man. And what is the body of Christ? His Church,” Augustine writes. He then adds, “Although we Christians are many, in the one Christ we are one. We are many and we are one - because we are united to Him, and if our Head is in heaven, the members will follow.”

"In Illo uno unum" sono le parole, pronunciate in un sermone da Sant’Agostino, che il Pontefice ha scelto nel suo motto episcopale. Un richiamo al Vescovo di Ippona anche nello stemma con l'immagine di un libro chiuso con sopra un cuore trafitto da una freccia.
Sono stati pubblicati, il 10 maggio, lo stemma e il motto di Papa Leone XIV, come pure il ritratto ufficiale del neo eletto Pontefice.
Lo stemma raffigura uno scudo diviso diagonalmente in due settori: quello in alto ha uno sfondo azzurro e vi è raffigurato un giglio bianco; quello in basso ha uno sfondo chiaro e vi è rappresentata una immagine che ricorda l’Ordine di sant’Agostino: un libro chiuso sul quale vi è un cuore trafitto da una freccia. L’immagine richiama l’esperienza della conversione di Sant’Agostino che lo stesso spiegava con le parole "Vulnerasti cor meum verbo tuo", "Hai trafitto il mio cuore con la tua Parola".
Nei tratti essenziali, quindi, Leone XIV ha confermato lo stemma anteriore, scelto per la sua consacrazione episcopale come pure il motto "In Illo uno unum". Si tratta delle parole che Sant’Agostino ha pronunciato in un sermone, l’Esposizione sul Salmo 127, per spiegare che "sebbene noi cristiani siamo molti, nell'unico Cristo siamo uno".
In una intervista con i media vaticani del luglio 2023, lo stesso Prevost spiegava: “Come si evince del mio motto episcopale, l’unità e la comunione fanno parte proprio del carisma dell’ordine di Sant’Agostino e anche del mio modo di agire e pensare. Penso che sia molto importante promuovere la comunione nella Chiesa e sappiamo bene che comunione, partecipazione e missione sono le tre parole chiave del Sinodo. Quindi, come agostiniano, per me promuovere l’unità e la comunione è fondamentale. Sant’Agostino parla molto dell’unità nella Chiesa e della necessità di viverla”.
Lys blanc, fils de Saint-Augustin: l’emblème pontifical de Léon XIV
Une fleur de lys, un livre et un cœur transpercé: le blason pontifical choisi par le Pape Léon XIV reprend largement celui de sa consécration comme évêque de Chiclayo au Pérou. Un blason qui illustre les orientations pastorales du premier Pape américain de l’histoire.
Publié ce samedi 10 mai, le blason pontifical du Pape Léon XIV sera apposé sur tous les documents officiels qu’il signera ou encore sur les livrets de messe qu’il présidera.
Orné des insignes pontificales, le blason comprend les clés de Pierre, en or et en argent, en référence au pouvoir de lier et de délier accordé par le Christ à l’apôtre et à ses successeurs (Évangile de saint Matthieu, 16,19). Celle en or représente le pouvoir des cieux, celle en argent le pouvoir sur la terre. Le premier Pape à mettre les clés sur son blason est Innocent III, Pape de 1198-1216.
Deuxième insigne pontificale, celle de la mitre, qui remplace le chapeau cardinalice présent sur l’emblème de celui qui s’appelait jusqu’alors le cardinal Robert Francis Prevost. En 2005, Benoît XVI a refusé d'apposer la tiare pontificale sur son emblème, François et Léon XIV l’ont imité dans ce choix, préférant inscrire la mitre d’évêque.
Un lys blanc
Les armoiries de Léon XIV sont un bouclier divisé en diagonale en deux parties. La partie de gauche, (ou senestre selon les termes héraldique), est à fond bleu et représente un lys blanc.
La partie inférieure est à fond clair et représente une image qui rappelle l'Ordre de Saint-Augustin: un livre fermé sur lequel se trouve un cœur transpercé par une flèche. Cette image rappelle l'expérience de conversion de saint Augustin, qu'il expliqua par les mots «Vulnerasti cor meum verbo tuo», «Tu as transpercé mon cœur de ta Parole».
Ainsi Léon XIV confirme donc les armoiries antérieures choisies pour son sacre épiscopal mais aussi sa devise. «In Illo uno unum» («En Celui qui est Un, nous sommes Un») est tirée d'un commentaire de Saint-Augustin sur le psaume 127.
Dans une interview accordée aux médias du Vatican en juillet 2023, le cardinal Prevost lui-même a expliqué sa devise: «Comme le montre ma devise épiscopale, l'unité et la communion font partie du charisme de l'Ordre de Saint-Augustin et aussi de ma façon d'agir et de penser. Je pense qu'il est très important de promouvoir la communion dans l'Église et nous savons très bien que la communion, la participation et la mission sont les trois mots clés du Synode. Donc, en tant qu'augustinien, la promotion de l'unité et de la communion est pour moi fondamentale. Saint-Augustin parle beaucoup de l'unité dans l'Église et de la nécessité de la vivre».
